Unión de la Selva is a Social Solidarity Society which is made up of more than 1,400 small indigenous producers from the Maya's Mam, Mocho, Tojolabal, Tzotzil and Tzeltal ethnic groups, and it is located in 146 communities in 18 different municipalities from Sierra Madre, Chiapas.
Unión de la Selva was created in 1980 as a response to the common problems of the farmers and as an effort to assure both fair prices for the coffee and the maintenance of the natural resources: land, water, flora and fauna, which have been damaged by the effects of the modern practices of monofarming. The organic farming is based on the traditional concept, and the effort is materialized in the preservation of the biodiversity with native farming and carrying out native methods.
