
A.T.C. (Asociación de Trabajadores del Campo, the Sandinista movement's union of Nicaraguan farmers) was founded in 1978. It produces sesame which is used as a main ingredient in the elaboration of snaks and buns and other Fair Trade products.
In 1990, as the faming increased to wide surfaces with sesame, the price in the global markets fell down dramatically, putting in danger the farmers existence in Nicaragua. At that moment, two European organizations decided to acquire the harverst from higher prices, selling it to consumers once transformed into buns and sesame snacks. The sales' incomes are addressed especially to unemployees and pensioners from the plantations who cannot survive with pensions of $20 monthly that companies pay.
The women's organization of ATC is also involved in the formation of rural encouraging women who guide the womens into a process of reflection about their life conditions and the political situation in the country, as well as carrying out the literacy campaigns.
